State - Childhood Lead Testing

Image

Lead is an invisible threat that is especially unsafe for children. Statistics show that 135,727 (20.3%) Michigan children under 6 years old had a blood lead test in 2024. Of those children tested, 5,583 (4.1%) had elevated blood lead levels (EBLL) of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or greater.  In October 2023, Michigan passed a law that requires all children to be tested for lead in blood at 12 months and 24 months of age and at other ages depending on certain risk factors. These rules went into effect April 30, 2025.

Childhood lead data is available on the MiTracking data portal. Lead data on the portal includes the following indicators: annual blood levels, blood levels by birth year, and age of housing.
