First Pediatric Deaths from Flu in Michigan
Friday February 14, 2025
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has confirmed the first influenza-associated pediatric deaths of the 2024-2025 flu season in Michigan.
Influenza claims the lives of children every year across the United States. MDHHS and the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency are urging all residents to get vaccinated for protection against the flu. It is not too late in the flu season to protect yourself, and your loved ones, against influenza (flu). Michigan is currently experiencing a very high rate of influenza which puts residents of all ages at risk.
Flu is a contagious respiratory disease that can lead to serious illness, hospitalization, or even death. CDC recommends everyone six months and older get an annual flu vaccine. “Flu vaccination is an important preventive tool for the young, the elderly, people with chronic health conditions, and people who are immunocompromised. Children less than 6 months of age are too young to be vaccinated so it is vital to protect them through vaccination of their close contacts, including parents, siblings, grandparents, child care workers, and healthcare personnel. Pregnant women should consider vaccination because it helps protect them, and their newborn baby for several months, from flu illness and hospitalization,” says Heidi Hazel, Director of Personal Health and Disease Prevention. “While some people who get vaccinated still get sick, flu vaccination has been shown in several studies to reduce severity of illness and hospitalization rates.”
Seasonal flu viruses can be detected year-round; however, seasonal flu activity often begins as early as October and November and can continue to occur as late as May. Call the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency to schedule your appointment.
