WIC Provides Infant Formula Alternatives during Similac Recall

Thursday February 24, 2022

Abbott Labs voluntarily recalled powder formulas, including Similac®, Alimentum® and EleCare® on February 17

WIC recipients are encouraged to check the lot numbers found on the bottom of the can. The products included in the recall have a multidigit number starting with the first two digits 22 through 37, contains K8, SH, or Z2 and have an expiration date of April 1, 2022, or after.

Temporary alternative choices of formulas with WIC benefits are found in the chart below. Clients will need to purchase the alternate formula that corresponds with their current formula. For example, if clients are currently receiving Similac Advance they will be able to purchase Enfamil Infant but not Enfamil Gentlease.

Clients can return opened or empty cans if they are part of the recall to any retail store. Clients do not need a receipt and formula does not have to be returned to the store where it was purchased. If there are any issues with returns, contact our office for assistance. Additional information regarding WIC benefits and the recall can be found on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website.
