Campground Sanitation
Safe and well-maintained campgrounds play an important role in protecting public health. Our Environmental Health Division conducts inspections and provides regulatory oversight to help ensure campgrounds comply with Michigan’s sanitation requirements. From water supply and sewage disposal to restroom facilities and general site maintenance, we work with campground operators to reduce health risks and provide safe recreational environments for the communities we serve.
Campgrounds
Campgrounds are licensed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and regulated by the BHSJ Community Health Agency under the authority of Part 125 of Public Act 368, PA 1978. Licensing and regulation of campgrounds is carried out to achieve the following goals:
- To eliminate public health conditions or hazards that could lead to injury, illness, or death.
- To minimize public health conditions that could pose a nuisance.
- To increase operator awareness and understanding of EGLE rule changes.
- To facilitate a working relationship between operators and EGLE.
