Healthy Heart Month

February is Healthy Hearts Month – What You Can Do To Keep Your Heart Healthy and Lessen Your Risk For Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency is here to remind residents that it is never too early to start caring about your heart health.

"Heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer in Michigan," said Yvonne Atwood, Director of Personal Health and Disease Prevention. "In fact, CVD has been the number one cause of death nationally every year since 1900, except in 1918 – the year of the devastating flu epidemic." In the past five years in Michigan, 58,298 women have died of heart disease. This number of women could easily fill Comerica Park for a Detroit Tigers baseball game. "Your actions today can help prevent, delay, or minimize the effects of heart disease," said Atwood. "The key strategy is controlling your risk factors."
